about MXGP
The FIM Motocross World Championship, known as MXGP, is the premier international motocross series, currently in its 68th season. The championship consists of two main classes: MXGP and MX2. The MXGP category features motorcycles up to 450cc for riders of any age, while the MX2 class is limited to riders under 23 years old, using bikes up to 250cc. Originally, the series had three engine categories (125cc, 250cc, and 500cc) until 2004 when it transitioned to four-stroke machines and rebranded the classes as MX1 and MX2, with MX1 later renamed MXGP in 2014.

Race Format & Points System
An MXGP race weekend spans two days, with Saturday dedicated to practice, qualifying, and a short Qualifying Race that awards points towards the championship. The results of the Qualifying Race determine the starting gate selection for the main Grand Prix races held on Sunday. The Sunday races consist of two motos, each lasting 30 minutes plus two laps, with points awarded based on finishing positions. The overall Grand Prix winner is determined by the combined results of both motos.
The MXGP championship follows a global calendar featuring 20 rounds, held on a variety of terrains worldwide, including traditional European tracks as well as locations in Argentina, Indonesia, Turkey, China, and Australia. Each round challenges riders with unique track conditions, from deep sand circuits in Belgium and the Netherlands to hard-packed clay courses in France.
The Role of Rider Skill & Machine Setup
Unlike some other motorsport disciplines, motocross places a greater emphasis on rider skill, endurance, and adaptability rather than sheer machine performance. While a well-tuned motorcycle with advanced suspension and handling is crucial, success in MXGP relies on a rider’s physical and mental strength, technique, and ability to read track conditions.
Starting Procedure & Race Structure
Each MXGP race features 40 riders who line up at the starting gate. The rider with the fastest Qualifying Race result chooses their starting position first, followed by the rest in order of qualification results. When the gate drops, all 40 riders accelerate into the first turn, where quick reflexes, optimal traction, and engine power play a critical role in securing a strong race position.
MXGP & MX2 & EMX Regulations
- MXGP: Maximum engine capacity of 450cc, open to riders of any age.
- MX2: Limited to motorcycles up to 250cc, with an age cap of 23 years. Riders who win two MX2 world championships are required to move up to MXGP.
- EMX: This is a youth and international racing series that includes several different categories, such as the EMX250 and EMX125 categories, where younger riders can compete and showcase their skills.
